NEWFM ‘dreaming’ of ratings success26Jul08
The second radio ratings results of 2008 have given the struggling NEWFM a shot in the arm, delivering the station a slight increase of 0.8 in the overall ratings.
Guy Ashford, now the apparent NEWFM manager, told the Newcastle Herald that the small increase was a "welcome boost" for the station after the station had recorded its lowest ever ratings in Survey One of just 5.6%.
Media Hunter hears that station management were very happy with themselves when the results were announced yesterday. Ashford claimed that, "It’s a sign that we’ve bounced back and the tides are changing."
He told the Newcastle Herald: "NEWFM did lose its way but it’s back on track, and it’s going to offer NXFM some serious competition. Within 24 months we’ll be on an even playing field with NX."
Pardon? Even playing field with NXFM within 2 years? In the immortal words of Daryl Kerrigan in The Castle – Tell him he’s dreaming.
NXFM is currently the Newcastle radio ratings leader with a dominant 22.5 share. Stablemate KOFM is second on 18.3. 2HD has been hanging in the race on 15.6. Meanwhile NEWFM lags behind ABC-1233 and Triple J in 6th place with near record low ratings.
With all due respect Guy, you will need a lot longer than 2 years to be on an "even playing field with NX" when it comes to audience ratings. You will need a strong roster of announcers, a tighter music playlist, a marketing budget and an unprecendented level of commitment and consistency from staff to get within kooee of NXFM. You also need NXFM to really drop the ball. This is very unlikely.
Maybe Ashford is referring to the impending switch to digital radio. The new radio format might be the "even field" that NEWFM is anticipating but somehow I don’t think that it will make much of a difference either. NEWFM operates on the even playing field of the FM band currently against NX and KO, after being the first Newcastle station on that format, and yet is miles behind. A quality product will get them closer, not a switch to digital.
NXFM is co-owned by Austereo and Macquarie Media, with the most experienced and professional management support in Australia at their disposal. They are currently raking in, with KOFM, close to 80% of the Newcastle radio advertising dollars. They aren’t about to let that slip through their hands without one hell of a fight.
Meanwhile, NEWFM is part of Bill Caralis’ Supernetwork radio group. This is the owner who has overseen Sydney 2SM’s slide into ratings oblivion, now not even able to register a ratings point and withdrawn from survey. The same owner has overseen NEWFM’s similar slide to record low ratings, massive staff turn-over, total loss of music and programming focus, and countless trips to Industrial Relations to defend himself against ex-staff claims.
NXFM and KOFM regularly team up to block programming moves by NEWFM and do so with great effect. The closest NEWFM has gotten to NXFM was earlier this decade when they reached 13.0 after two years of consistent programming, a strong breakfast team and big promotions. Then the slide started again.
The odds of them getting even that close this time around are slim at best. One of their biggest problems may be the Breakfast show, ironically now starring half of the successful team of earlier in the decade, Steve St John. NEWFM Breakfast had only a small rise of 0.5 in Survey 2, while Mornings rose 1.5 and Afternoon rose 2.3. That tells me that while the music is gaining favour the Breakfast team hasn’t made an impact yet. A move of 0.5 is basically margin of error.
Credit where its due though. I understand that Guy Ashford is a good operator and is working hard to turn the two Sandgate stations around. It is the first time in four years that they have had anything resembling a management team. NEWFM is certainly sounding better since the very quiet re-launch 2 months ago, although many industry pundits believe they are a little off target with their strategy.
At least NEWFM seems to have a plan again, and most advertisers in this market hope they can stick to it and succeed. Newcastle desperately needs a more competitve radio market to give advertisers and listeners some serious alternatives. Eighty percent of radio ad revenue going to the NX/KO combination is not healthy.
However, NEWFM need a few more rises before they get too carried away with talk of ratings success.

Good article…tell Bill he’s dreaming!!
NEW will never, ever go close to NX or KO.
Reason 1 – KO and NX have quality, heritage breakfast teams.
Reason 2 – KO and NX have quality Drive programs – Hamish and Andy are rating as strong if not stronger than Martin/Molloy did.
Reason 3 – KO and NX market themselves agressively. NEWFM’s marketing budget can’t even see them put on a BBQ.
Reason 4 – Austereo versus Caralis. It’s like SBS fighting Seven and Nine combined.
Reason 5 – because the Newcastle market isn’t stupid, and knows what Caralis represents – underpaid and overworked staff with the poor bastards in the Sydney newsroom struggling with English as a second language (Satyam Weinstein anyone) let alone putting out a quality news broadcast.
After a pretty hard week I was in need of a laugh and I had a big chuckle this morning when I read the Herald. Newfm challenging NXFM within 2 years. I haven’t laughed so hard in years. Maybe they should put Guy Ashford on air as a comedy act. He can tell stories about how NXFM are worried about them creeping up and taking their mantle from a mere 17 points behind. Or maybe the one about how Bill is such a great bloke. Or how about the “building a new studio” gag. Hilarious stuff! Keep up the great work Guy, you’ve made my day.
whats disgrace NEWFM has become. The website appears to have been put together by a colour blind labrador. NXFM is ripe for the picking. I have had visits to the dentist that have been funnnier than NX’s breakfast crew. Mr Ashford I implore you to take some initiative, find a point of difference, stop copying every other radio station in the country, talk to your customers and come up with a package which will turn customers back to NEWFM.
Wow Media Hunter, someone at NEWFM has had a shot at you at Google Groups discussion. They obviously don’t like the truth..or maybe Caralis is now writing his own material. My bet is that the writer is actually St John.
When’s the new studios being built? Did the Greek marble become ‘lost in transit’?
Since the relaunch, has there been any rise in stock & property losses from the building? One of the appointees bagged themselves a couch plus many other items in the early 90′s.
Nothing would surprise me J Preston. Can you email me the url of this discussion group pls? I am not aware of it.
Media Hunter isn’t the only site dismayed with the direction of NEWFM and other Caralis station. MediaSpy has a forum that discusses the Supernetwork and it makes interesting reading.

so does the DTV Forum. it also talks about Newcastle radio.
who isn’t!!!!!!!!
Bring back Twink Story to run 2HD!
They are having a big argument over at google groups discussion following this story. Seems some current an ex-staff are firing shots at each other (and you). A few have waded in to give the whingers a big serve. Makes for funny reading.
Thx for the heads-up J Preston. I checked out that discussion group a few days ago. Seems to be the home of bitter old jocks with too much time on their hands. Let the have at it, life is to short to get ulcers over that rubbish.
what is the site…
i am interested in reading it..
In 1989/90 I did the 9 to midday shift on New FM and rated number 1 with almost 30% of the market. On the back of those figures NEW FM was then the number one rating station in Newcastle. What the f*ck has happened since? I know Guy Ashford to be a very professional operator and a damn good bloke. He has a great shot at turning NEW around and I wish him all the best.
Survey 3 is out tomorrow and I have to say that NEW FM is running a very tight ship at the moment and a result in the low 7′s to high 8′s is not out of the question and would be a good result for them.
Gotta take my hat off to Guy Ashford for turning the place around on what I assume is a 2 cent budget, Not only are St John and Don a genuine alternative to the NX Crew & Tanya and the annoying pommy, but they have been out and about in the community doing Outside Broadcasts regularly, giving away free fuel, 105 minute non stop music marathons and Ive heard some great phone scams recently just like the good old Fat Boys days and it makes for great easy to listen to radio.
Also whoever has done the NEW FM website needs a pat on the back as it has brought them back to the big boys finally.
Well done Guy.
