Newcastle radio survey 3 2009
6Nov09

It’s been a long, long time since one Newcastle radio station dominated this market, you’d have to go back to the early 80′s and it was probably 1341 2NX, but NXFM have hit No. 1 in all sessions BMADE with an all time record cume of 194,000 listeners.

Good news also for 1233 Breakfast host Aaron Kearney jumping almost 3% to 14.4% to be No. 3 Breakfast overall behind NX and KO.

It’s been a fairly consistent year for KOFM while at Sandgate, the closed door meetings begin. 2HD loses No.1 Mornings and Nights… NEW FM slight improvements might give some heart but it’s a long slow climb from the bottom when the No.1 station has almost 4 times the share.

Plus NEW FM now has to look for new talent once again with Meryl Swanson resigning from the breakfast show, she and Steve St John have been the most consistent breakfast team (about 15 months) NEW FM has had for many years.

In other radio rumors we hear Garth Russell has resigned from 1233 ABC Newcastle to pursue other business interests.

If New FM was a race horse the white screen would have gone up long ago

If Garth goes from 1233 maybe last years rumor Luke Grant was leaving 2HD to go to the ABC is back on again. He’ll probably want to go now.

18 months ago the Herald reported Guy Ashford (HD/NEW Manager)had promised Bill Caralis NEW FM would be on an even playing field with NX & KO within two years. Well that promise has less than 6 months left come true and time is rapidly running out. At the time Mediahunter predicted it would be more likely 2HD would be on an even playing field with NEW FM. Looking at these numbers MH got it spot on.

The biggest problem 2HD finds themselves in nowadays is a lack of relevance. They’re being squeezed musically by the ever-improving NUR and talk-wise by the ABC. Because HD has to network a lot of programmes, local issues sometimes need to take a backseat to the issues which affect the rest of the state, but have no relevance here, such as cotton-farming out at Gunnedah.

2HD need to seriously look at their daytime programming. Steve Price with three hours of constant talkback in the morning leads into a program through the afternoon with a mix of music and a lot of talk. I think perhaps HD would do better to drop the afternoon talk and just go super-local with a format similar to the Capital Radio Network – “Forever Classic.” Focus content solely on the Hunter, classic hits from the 60s, 70s and 80s with personality radio (bring back King, drop Bultitude).

NEWFM, well a slight rise is encouraging but I still feel it’s going down the wrong path. You are really being stupid trying to take on the might of Austereo with huge resources when you’re the little-guy. I would seriously love NEWFM to go back to its rock roots and push KO older or throw NEWFM out the door and go for those 30+ women who find NX too doofy, KO too rocky and HD too old.

The musical improvement of nurfm and other Community radio stations can only hurt historically middle of the road radio such as HD.

HD needs to focus on local issues and forget all the diatribe used in its networking. Get back to basics.
