Newcastle radio: AM stations fall in Survey 1, 2012
20Apr12

by [me]

The latest Newcastle radio ratings delivered bad news for those stations on the AM dial with both 2HD and ABC1233 recording significant falls.

NXFM topped the ratings again with a share of 18.9%, holding out stablemate KOFM on 17.6%. NEWFM recorded a rise of 1.1 for a share of 8.8% whilst NXFM was the only other station to increase their share.

The real damage was on the AM dial where both 2HD and ABC1233 dropped 2.8%.

For 2HD it was their lowest ratings in the last few decades and signals a significant loss of support. The station lost share in every demographic including a massive loss of 7.2% with the 65+ audience who had previously been their main supporters. 2HD also went down in every shift except Drive, including a drop of 5.3 in Mornings with John Laws.

The cumulative audience figures were even more revealing. 2HD now has a cumulative audience of just 65,000 for the week, while ABC1233 who also took a big hit still has 19,000 more listeners across the 7 days.

For ABC this survey may yet be an anomaly after a few solid years of good results. But at 2HD the alarm bells should be ringing loudly as this result is part of a long term decline that now sees them in the worst position I can remember. (Note: I previously work at 2HD and NEWFM and have followed their fortunes for over 20 years).

When the current management team was installed at Sandgate 2HD had a share of 15.6% and NEWFM was the basket case they were trying to lift from around 7%. Four years later NEWFM is closing in on 2HD for all the wrong reasons. NEWFM has spun its wheels in this time but 2HD has dropped 6%. The cumulative audience is a major concern. the combined audiences of 2HD and NEWFM are similar to the signal station audience of KOFM or NXFM.

I have been alarmed at the disparity between NXFM / KOFM and 2HD / NEWFM for years as it represents a major issue for advertisers and the quality of Newcastle radio. Well its now officially worse than ever.

Something needs to change before commercial radio becomes totally irrelevant in this market.

The PD and GM team at Sandgate since 2007 sure have a winning formula. What an absolute disgrace that joint venture has become in recent times. New FM haven’t been able to beat even the youth national broadcaster since…..when? New FM is a basket case and in over 4 years under new PD and Management the station has gone nowhere. Can’t even pull double figures once in all that time with an FM licence against two others in the market.

As for 2HD….well what the hell has happened to this once pillar of Newcastle Radio for listeners 55+. Talkin Sport has never rated in a sport/rugby league mad city like this one so that signals major problems right there yet 2HD persist with a Drive show that has never worked and pulls very low figures.

Do we even bother mentioning Afternoon figures on 2HD? They are just plain terrible. New FM easily the lowest rating station by a country mile even pull a better Nights figure than 2HD do 12-4pm during the middle of the day.

It’s a constant party 365 days a year at Charlestown…so sad to see this once great market in Australian Radio end up like a very poor regional market with no opposition for the market leaders.

Ultimately it’s the listeners and advertisers who suffer badly for lack of competition in this city. In a day and age when radio in general should be at it’s absolute best to compete with technology enhanced music services other than traditional ones, 2 stations at Sandgate are clearly at their worst. They both no longer serve enough of the Newcastle population with anything worth listening to and the people of this city continue to send New FM & 2HD a very clear message.

Quite amazing that both Guy Ashford and especially Steve St. John still have jobs. Steve St. John has been on 2HD where he failed and he’s been part of at least 6 breakfast shows on NEW that have all failed……It helps when you’re mates with the boss ! The Afternoon and Midnight shows on 2HD are possibly the two worst radio shows ever heard anywhere in Australia, yet they remain. John Laws has so much time off that he’s become redundant. He takes at least 1 day off every week and has just begun another seven week holiday after having 12 weeks off recently !!! Bill Caralis either doesn’t know how to read a survey book or Guy Ashford simply doesn’t tell him what’s happening. Either way, it’s sad that these once mighty radio stations called 2HD and NEW FM are now well and truly on the scrapheap of oblivion.

Comment by Grahame Cherry on April 21st, 2012

does anyone know what percentage of Australia music each radio station in newcastle play? (JJJ not included)

(I am just wondering how much they play and how much they should play when it comes to Australian music.)

Comment by mossie on April 21st, 2012

IS this the lowest share for 2HD in its history?

Government inquiry needed now to investigate how Uncle Bill has destroyed so many regional stations across NSW/SE QLD.

Comment by The Big Man on April 22nd, 2012

I’m not sure if its the lowest share ever for 2HD. I vaguely remember it with very poor results in late ’80′s but don’t think it was this low. Certainly, its the lowest I have seen 2HD since 1990 when I started paying attention.

Comment by Media Hunter on April 23rd, 2012

Amazing how one of the quoted ppl in a previous post was very much out of favour with the SRN boss in the xmas of 2009…so much so according to internal sources at the time,if my information was correct, a new programmer was expected to arrive @ Sandgate in January 2010 but after continual delays in a start date, that person resigned and left the group entirely. Amazing how fragile a business radio is. Had it not have been for someone else’s frustration at delays back then, Sandgate may have been a very different place today. That guy who never end up arriving in Newcastle in the end was well respected by other radio colleagues in the industry and had the goods to help New FM. I believe he and Mr Caralis knew each other very well over many years. Shame really.

Comment by Rick on April 23rd, 2012

What hope is there for these two stations and indeed the network that DOESN’T have a Programme Director, Chief Engineer, Operations Manager, Network Programme Manager, Promotions Director etc etc etc. Indeed, even the journos are just cadets because then Bill doesn’t have to pay Award wages. Why he’s let these two stations run down to the bare bottom of the barrel is a tragedy. I was informed recently that they don’t have any sort of quality control either. The afternoon and overnight announcers have never been told what to do and what not to do – and it sounds like it ! They are possibly the most amateur and unprofessional programmes on radio anywhere – and they get networked to the rest of Australia !!!

Comment by Grahame Cherry on April 23rd, 2012

The overnight announcer has been with the network for apparently about 20 years, I believe, however, I believe he has, until recently never even heard of or met award winning ABC broadcaster, Aaron Kearney, even though Mr Kearney also worked on the same network. Good luck if you want an up to date news bulletin during the overnight, you usually get replays from about 8pm until 5am, SO MUCH FOR NOT MISSING A THING!!!!

Comment by Jeff from Morisset on April 26th, 2012

About time the Newcastle Herald wrote another full page story on the continuous shrinking and demise of these stations at Sandgate. Does anyone know why Bill Caralis buys into radio in competitive markets? The motivation is certainly not success.

Comment by Rick on April 26th, 2012

Heard on 2HD last week “Where they take news seriously” that Colin Hay of Men at Work had died. It was actually Greg Ham. That’s what happens when you employ cadet journos because they are cheaper than paying the Award rate.

I RECENTLY MOVED BACK TO NEWCASTLE FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE JUNE 2008.ON THE WEEKEND,I TOOK A BREAK FROM UNPACKING BOXES TO GO AND HAVE A COFFEE AT THE LOCAL SHOPPING COMPLEX,ABOUT 5 MINUTES FROM WHERE I (NOW) LIVE.I RECOGNISED AN EX-NEW FM BREAKFAST-SHOW-DJ SIPPING ON A COFFEE IN THE SAME CAFE.

IN THE PROCESS OF STRIKING UP A CHAT WITH HIM AND TELLING HIM HOW MUCH I ENJOYED HIS STYLE OF PRESENTING AND WHAT WAS A BRILLIANT SENSE OF HUMOUR AND COMEDY WHEN HE FILLED THE AIRWAVES,HE LAMENTED THAT RADIO THESE DAYS IS ALL ABOUT HIRING INEXPERIENCED AND/OR CHEAP OR COST-EFFECTIVE HOSTS,WITH THE EMPHASIS ON A GUY SAYING SOMETHING AND A CHICK LAUGHING AT EVERYTHING HE SAYS,REGARDLESS OF WHAT HE SAYS.

WHEN I TOLD HIM I HAD BEEN BACK 2 MONTHS AND HAD NOT HEARD ONE RADIO-STATION IN NEWCASTLE THAT WAS WORTH LISTENING TO, HIS REMARK WAS “DO WHAT PLEANTY OF NOVOCASTRIANS ARE DOING.TURN OFF THE STATIONS HERE;TURN ON YOUR P.C.AND LISTEN DOWNLINE TO A RADIO-STATION ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD”.

SEEING AS I WASN’T GETTING ANY LOCAL CONTENT OR NOTIFICATION OF EVENTS HAPPENING IN MY OWN CITY,NEWS SEEMED TO BE ON RELAY FROM SYDNEY,MELBOURNE OR WHEREVER AND GROSSLY BEHIND THE TIMES,I WAS HELD TO RANSOM WITH ORDINARY MUSIC AND THE SAME 50 SONGS ROLLING AROUND DAILY,I TOOK HIS ADVICE.I NOW GET MY NEWS 24/7 FROM SKY ON FOXTEL;I KEEP UP TO DATE WITH DEVELOPING NEWS AND EVENTS LOCALLY BY DIALLING UP GOOGLE AND NINEMSN AND LISTEN TO (LITTLE-REPETITIVE) ROCK STATIONS ACROSS THE GLOBE IN CANADA,THE U.S.,THE U.K. OR INTERSTATE.

WHO NEEDS NEWCASTLE RADIO ?

Comment by louloubellringer on April 30th, 2012

Billy.. do these things and you might keep HD at least respectible.

1. Drop Laws. He is tired and frankly VERY VERY BORDING. Replace with Hadley and Jones.

2. Drop Gilbert. The man is painful. Replace with 2GBs steve Price Show.

3. Throw some cash at your brekky show. Better news coverage and an announcer who will be controversial.

4. You may keep Talking Sport. It’s a point of difference and suitable in the Newcastle marketplace.

5. Rev up your weekends. Every Saturday morning your stations should be live on location somewhere – even if its not making any cash from the promotion.

Now Billy, I know that this might cost some money but Newcastle is a different market to the rest of your network. Newcastle is competitive. You cant just be painfully cheap and nasty here – it eventually catches up with you and bites you in the backside.

Comment by Liam on April 30th, 2012

Have you ever heard how bad the show promos are in Sydney on 2SM?

The quality, editing and content used is poor poor poor. 2SM still sounds like a country radio station, but now it’s got John Laws, big deal. The guy is away more days than he is there.

Comment by Stuart on April 30th, 2012

Talkin’ Sport is a point of difference alright, IT DOESN’T RATE and never has. Boring. As for taking 2GB programming, Caralis will NEVER do it, he likes to have his own programmes. Can’t see Hadley wanting to broadcast on a Caralis station either, they both dislike each other big time. One simple answer for the future of 2HD & New FM, sell it to someone who is serious

Comment by Rick on May 1st, 2012

As said in a previous post; “The afternoon and overnight announcers have never been told what to do and what not to do – and it sounds like it! They are possibly the most amateur and unprofessional programmes on radio anywhere – and they get networked to the rest of Australia!” Couldn’t agree more. But have you heard the bloke who has been doing the brekky shift on HD this week? What an awful impersonation of an announcer he is. Where did they dig this bloke up from? Some community station from the back of beyond or did they find him on the street somewhere? He is a perfect example of what is wrong not only with HD, but the entire Super Network! I bet ya he is a mate of the boss! Surveys tell the truth and the truth for HD and NewFM is that they have no listeners and no sales story. Its as if the current manager is purposely running both stations into the ground so someone he knows can buy them both at the right price or perhaps the current manager has no idea how to run a radio station and make it work?

Comment by Big Ears on May 2nd, 2012

Who has been doing breakfast on 2HD lately? Richard King usually in the chair or is he away?

Comment by Stuart on May 3rd, 2012

What ever happened to the new state of the art building at Sandgate that was promised when the new management team took over in 2007???? I noticed the other day they have finally received some paint for the outside of the building, one sign each (per station) and a security camera out the front. Yep – state of the art alright

Comment by Stuart on May 3rd, 2012

I don’t want to denigrate anyone but the midnight to dawn announcer on 2HD and the super network sounds semi-literate. Graeme Gilbert sounds like a conservative undertaker, Grant Goldman should have retired to his National Party heartland years ago, Carter Edwards is a hillbilly posing as a political commentator, John Laws and his political views are a turn off, etc, etc, etc. 2HD should drop lop-sided politics.

Comment by Brian on May 3rd, 2012

Other than John Laws, none of the announcers on 2HD are talkback jox. They are all ex music jox having to do talkback because it’s a cheap format to run. I am lead to believe that most of the announcers are contractors to the station and not full time employees. Can anyone confirm this?

Comment by Dave on May 3rd, 2012

According to her Facebook page, The 2HD Breakfast Producer has been dismissed.

Comment by The Big Man on May 4th, 2012

Had a listen to New FM Breakfast this morning for 10 minutes in the car while stuck in traffic. Gee, what a terrible show. The two females voices were horrible and St John, well………….. * shakes head *. No wonder they can’t even beat Triple J @ Breakfast. Why is this station sooo bad. Time for Bill Caralis to leave the office and visit Sandgate.

Comment by Mike on May 8th, 2012

THE LAST DECENT BREAKFAST HOST NEW FM HAD WAS DON MAYO.HE WAS GOOD.SO WHAT DOES NEW FM DO ? OF COURSE;THEY GET RID OF HIM.

Comment by louloubellringer on May 9th, 2012

They need to get rid of the ppl running the place. It’s a disgrace.

Comment by John on May 10th, 2012

Morale is so poor at a station in QLD that the old tea lady running it(and still traffic scheduler)forces the seven staff members left in the place to have lunch with her every Friday at their own cost, this apparently is to help build team work lol

Comment by Nicko on May 11th, 2012

NICKO…THAT’S UNBELIEVABLE !! IF YOU WANT A BETTER STORY,I WAS TOLD BY A CHICK (WHO NOW WORKS AT NX-FM) THAT A FEW YEARS AGO,NEW FM HAD A CONTEST EACH MORNING WHERE YOU COULD WIN A PLASMA TV.ONLY PROBLEM WAS,THE DJ’S HAD TO MAKE SURE THERE WAS “NEVER” A WINNER BECAUSE
THERE WAS NO PLASMA !! HOW DOES A REPUTABLE RADIO-STATION GET AWAY WITH SOMETHING LIKE THAT ???

Comment by louloubellringer on May 15th, 2012

Loulou. i was apd/md at newfm when the plasma quiz was on and your info is totally incorrect. i.m not sure which girl is working at nx now i cant think of who it is but i was there when people were winning the tvs that from memory were from the good guys. There were about ten given away

Comment by Brad on May 16th, 2012

Brad, Bill Caralis does not have Assistant PD’s in the network so your information is incorrect on that front. Lots of titles made up in the SRN..hahaha.

Comment by Nicko on May 17th, 2012

and Brad I know who you are BTW so need to respond :)

Comment by Nicko on May 17th, 2012

HELLO BRAD.I ASSUME YOU ARE THE FELLOW WHO USED TO BE FROM DUBBO ? I CAN ASSURE YOU THE INFO I WAS TOLD ABOUT IS INDEED CORRECT.NEW FM HAD A GUY CALLED “BLIND MELON (R.I.P)” PRE-RECORDING THE CONTESTANTS THE DAY BEFORE FROM A LIST OF REGULAR CALLERS & MATES HANDED TO CERTAIN PEOPLE FROM STEVE ST JOHN TO BE THE NEXT DAYS …ahem…
CONTESTANT(S).

ONE OF THE REGULAR PEOPLE PHONED EITHER AS A “CALLER FOR PHONE-TOPICS” OR TO USE A FAKE NAME AS A CONTESTANT,WAS A FELLOW CALLED “SCOTT”,ONE OF STEVE ST JOHNS MATES,A CHUBBY GENT WITH A BEARD WHO I ALSO KNOW.WOULD YOU LIKE ME TO GO FURTHER WITH MORE INFO ?

I’M SURE EVERYONE KNOWS ABOUT IT.ALSO; AT THAT PARTICULAR TIME,THE GOOD GUYS “NEVER” SPONSORED THIS ….ahem…PLASMA QUIZ.

Comment by louloubellringer on May 18th, 2012

A former (one of many) Super Network employee describes Bill Caralis as “Radio Cancer”

Comment by Big Ears on May 18th, 2012

Nicko it doesn’t bother me if you know who i am. Like my comment said i’m Brad Wilson. I don’t know who you are and it doesn’t really interest me. It’s funny on the apd comment cause the reference i have states it clearly.
and loulou i worked at newfm for around five years and was good mates with melon. and i’m not from dubbo so not sure where that came from. I’m only telling you what i know and it may not of been good guys it might of been domayne all i know is that the comp was run live on breakfast i was freeking there working alongside st john you would think i would know and meryl swanson was stjohns co host at the time. but you believe what you want to believe. I can remember three tv’s going off in a row. I dont work in radio anymore and i’m not trying to sound defensive of the caralis network as i left for a reason but this info you got of melon is not acurate.
But anyhow it doesnt really matter i dont mind anyone having a bash about a sound of a station or what have but try and keep it acurate

Comment by Brad on May 18th, 2012

HELLO AGAIN BRAD.I STAND BY MY COMMENT & AM HAPPY TO DO SO LEGALLY.SAY THE WORD & IF YOU AGREE TO MEET F2F,I WILL HAPPILY BRING ALONG THE PERSON(S)STATING FACT.I INFER AGAIN;”NO”(AS IN “NONE”)PLASMAS WERE EVER GIVEN AWAY AS PER MY EMAIL TO THIS MATTER,DATED MAY 15,2012.I FAIL TO SEE THE REFERENCE TO Ms(?)SWANSON.

FOR WHAT IT’S WORTH;NEW FM HAS A LOT OF DISGRUNTLED CURRENT & EX-STAFF (WHICH MAY OUTLINE THE HISTORY OF MISERY THE PLACE HAS SET A TONE FOR,WHICH STILL CONTINUES)JUST ITCHING FOR THEIR DAY IN THE SUN & TO RETURN SERVE FOR THE WAY THEY WERE/ARE TREATED.I AM SIMPLY INFORMING THOSE THAT HAVE A RIGHT TO KNOW,HOW THIS PLACE IS,WAS & HAS-BEEN RUN (WITH A HUGE EMPHASIS ON THE WORD “HASBEEN”).

AND I DON’T HAVE TO FERRET AROUND FOR DETAILS.PEOPLE ARE COMING TO ME TO REVEAL THIS INFORMATION.

ANOTHER THING YOU OVERLOOK,BRAD,IS PLENTY OF PEOPLE (EXCLUDING YOURSELF)WORKED/WORK THERE AS WELL.I’M SURE DURING THE COURSE OF CARRYING OUT YOUR DUTIES (AS IN THE MANNER OF THE ROLE YOU SAY YOU HAD)COULDN’T KEEP YOU ON THE PULSE OF WHAT WENT ON 24/7,IN TIMES PAST AND ATM.BUT WHAT WOULD ONE EXPECT WHEN OPPOSITION RADIO-STATIONS POSSESSED THE NEW-FM HOTLINE,SUPPOSEDLY N/A FROM THE PUBLIC ! IF EVERYONE ELSE KNEW YOUR BUSINESS,HOW COULD YOU KEEP A LID ON WHAT WAS GOING ON,BRAD ??

IN REGARDS TO “BLIND MELON…R.I.P…”,NOBODY WANTS TO SPEAK ILL OF THE DEAD.BUT YOU ARE DISPLAYING IGNORANCE OF THE FACT THESE THINGS TOOK PLACE WHILE HE AUTOMATED HIS ON-AIR SHIFT IN ONE STUDIO & PRE-RECORDED THE “PLASMA QUIZ” WITH PRE-RIGGED-CONTESTANTS,IN ANOTHER STUDIO.

ALSO;”BLIND MELON”,DID HAVE A LOT OF HEALTH-FACULTY DILEMMAS AND STRETCHED HONESTY FACTORS TO SUIT HIM.I OUGHT TO KNOW;I DEALT WITH HIM A LOT DURING HIS ACCIDENT.

THE TRUTH HURTS.BUT THEN AGAIN.I’M UNSURE NEW FM WOULDN’T KNOW (NOW OR IN PAST TIMES) WHAT THE TRUTH IS.

SO;DON’T MAKE A MOCKERY OF MY INTEGRITY.

Comment by louloubellringer on May 19th, 2012

In conversation with family and friends when the topic of good radio comes up the two most talked about stations that they love are 1629AM Newcastle and 2NUR-FM. The main reason is they play music all the time and have pleasant sounding announcers. In my travels out and about I have heard both 1629AM Newcastle and 2NUR-FM playing in the background of doctors surgery waiting rooms, corner shops, service stations, taxis, bus drivers personal radios etc. The only time I hear the commercial stations is via tradies work sites and hairdressing salons. I wonder what what the percentage is of both radio stations given they never appear in these surveys?

Comment by Music Man on May 21st, 2012

One better, what about the QLD radio station who failed to allow a competition to finish for a cash prize that was up to over $1,500 with a daily secret sound..apparently this was pulled without explanation to staff by the manager in question. I’m sure ACMA would enjoy hearing about that one. That cannot be legal surely? Anyone got an answer?

Comment by Rick on May 25th, 2012

Let’s be honest. Meryl Swanson & Gary Stewart would NEVER get a job at a proper radio station. That’s why they’re both on 2HD, where nobody listens or cares. They would have to be the two sorst radio announcers in Australia and their ratings are testament to that.

Comment by Grahame Cherry on June 8th, 2012

Page 22 of today’s Sunday Telegraph has a story about 2SM and Billy Boy owing the ATO $4.5 million dollars in tax. About sums up the operation really doesn’t it.

Comment by Rick on June 10th, 2012

DON’T WORRY ABOUT BILLY,RICK.HE CAN ALWAYS SELL NEW FM & 2HD.THAT SHOULD PAY ABOUT 5-HUNDRED DOLLARS OFF THE DEBT.

Comment by louloubellringer on June 13th, 2012

This Meryl Swanson show is really really bad. Ratings reflect the same. Most of Newcastle can’t be bothered listening, amazing that this same show is networked. Dear dear dear.

Comment by Rick on June 20th, 2012

Can’t believe how appalling this radio network and their announcers are.
The afternoon programme is an insult to anybodys intelligence and yet it remains with its constant DRIBBLE, DRIBBLE !!!
2HD what is happening in that place
Station promos every 3 minutes “WAKE UP WITH RICHARD KING,,
AFTERNOONS WITH MERYL SWANSON,, over & over for the past couple of years.
Nobody can tolerate this type of repetition or maybe torture would be a better word.

Comment by Graham Hawkes on June 24th, 2012

canm someone explain the cumulative audience to me and what it means? I noticed 2HD has higher ratings then New Fm but 2Hd has 65,000 and New Fm have 95,000.

Comment by mossie on June 25th, 2012

Hi mossie,

The key difference here is T.S.L, or Time Spent Listening. In short, 2HD has an older audience who listen for MUCH longer periods through the week compared to the 95,000 who listen to NEW-FM, and only listen perhaps for minutes at a time. T.S.L has a bearing on the overall rating result. Radio surveys take into account not only the numbers of people listening, but also how long they listen for. Generally speaking, the likes of KO and NX rely on a massive cumulative weekly audience coupled with perhaps a smaller T.S.L than HD to trounce the ratings. If HD didn’t have such a high T.S.L from their comparatively small audience, they would not have much of a ratings share at all. Hope this helps.

Comment by ghee on June 25th, 2012

Just to clarify, KO and NX rely on a massive cumulative audience and shorter T.S.L compared to the other rated stations (not just HD) for their market share.

Comment by ghee on June 25th, 2012

Cumulative audience is as it sounds. The cumulative number of people who listen to a station in a week.
