How much is a Duckworth?
5Mar09

As a kid growing up in Lake Macquarie radio listening options were pretty limited. The old 2NX was on the AM dial playing Top 40. Fortunately the FM band started to come alive with scratchy sounds from Sydney when 2MMM launched.

I managed to rig up a rather large aerial and pick up the Sydney signals loud and clear. It was a revelation. Great music, higher quality sound and fantastic announcers. 2MMM became my station of choice in the 80′s. I woke to Uncle Doug Mulray, listened to Stuart Cranney, Jonno and Danno and Rob Duckworth every day. Golden years.

Now, word is out that one of those favourite announcers of my youth is about to do a stint at NEWFM. Rob Duckworth is said to be filling in for Blanchey while he takes holidays, and that he may stay longer. This is great news for NEWFM, bringing an immensely experienced and professional talent to Sandgate.

Duckworth was axed from TripleM in December after the station posted its worst-ever ratings.

The big question now, if it does actually happen, will be what effect Duckworth has on the ratings. He is not a household name in this market, despite a long history in Sydney. He will be in a daytime shift, probably Drive, so it won’t give the station the Breakfast kick they need. And it doesn’t mean the format and music will change (unless he will have a say in programming too). We are already well into Survey one so we can’t realistically expect this to make a big impact.

All the same, it could be good news for NEWFM, especially if Rob Duckworth decides to stay. Time will tell.

Not even experience like Rob Duckworth’s will help NEWFM. They need to tell people he’s on air for a start. And if they only tell the people that already listen that will be 5 that know.

Rob Duckworth the planet rock legend hopefully he stays on it will just depend weather bill pays him properly, and hopefully he can convince St john to play rock music rather than the girly dance he’s playing now or just make rob music director… So does anyone know when the man will be starting his gig on air???? Craig geat job ur doing keep it up mate

Getting Rob Duckworth in for two weeks is a fantastic coup for NEW FM but it is going to require at least some promotion and not just on NEW FM either!

Quack, quack, quack …. that’s the sound all of my knockers are making now. I’ve made donkeys out of yous all.
What’s a duck worth ? Plenty, let me tell ya.
This fellow is no goose !
He’s costing more than I pay two of other Supernetwork announcers put together … that wouldn’t be too hard but !
(Did I say that or just think it).
And I’m happy to pay him … (for two weeks anyway).
Hey … who else is here !
Must be that duck I was talking about earlier … ha ha ha.
Quack, quack, quack … go the donkeys !

I reckon getting Rob Duckworth is the radio coup of the century … maybe the millenium. But I don’t want all this talk of coups getting silly.
I mean you don’t keep ducks in coups … that’s where chickens are kept.
And we know that Rob’s a Duckworth … not a Chickenworth.
Make sense ? It’s as easy to understand as ABC … or as my philosophy on running a Supernetworth.
You might think these are the ramblings of an old eccentric radio tycoon … don’t confuse that with a raccoon !
And just to finish off … quack, quack, quack go the donkeys !

I think Rob will help Newfms young team and show them some direction.
when i was in town last week i did notice on new,nx &ko the djs all sounded board,i think most of the newcaslt djs dont wanna make it bigger eg in sydney or melbourne.
Newcastle is the place you go to before sydney , melbourne & brisbane.

i think with Rob in at new it will help all add some life there (hope)(
it would be fantastic for newcastle/hunter to see new running hard with ko/nx im not saying it will happen now but with a talent like rob it will help new fm a lot
remember he was at hot tomato on gold coast it is the (same format) as new)

Comment by matt on March 9th, 2009

he is a fantastic operator
who would of thought new fm has now newcastles best jock

Comment by damo on March 9th, 2009

Hey Matt and Damo ….
SETTLE … SETTTTLLLLLE Boys !
Not to many wraps.
You know what happens when a ‘jock’ gets wind of a few wraps …. Bingo he asks for a pay rise !
Let’s not get carried away with the “Newcastle’s best jock’ tag.
Next thing ya know Old Ducky will be calling Uncle Bill (yours truly) and asking for a tickle in the back pocket.
Yo know what i mean … so let’s keep the wraps for chicken schnitzels and souvlaki.
Now that’s a combo … chicken and souvlaki wrap … mmmm !
Washed down with an icy cold diet coke … real gourmet stuff that !

What a pleasure it was to listen to Rob. I hope they move hime to breafast i think they need his touch.

Comment by cess on March 9th, 2009

so if Rob stays on will he be replacing someone else?

Comment by maree on March 10th, 2009

prob not because NEWFM has been advertising for new jocks, so im sure he’ll fit straight in without taking anyone off air and has anyone noticed that the anouncers have been doing really long hours there i heard Blind Melon doing 9am till 3pm last Friday, so im really sure they need NEW jocks.

Comment by cess on March 10th, 2009

Hello Guys
I read with interest all the lovely things you have said about Rob Duckworth.
I had the pleasure of working with him at triple m for many years. I grew up in Sydney listening to him on triple m and 2sm way back , he was my inspiration.
I see how many of you consider him to be the best jock in Newcastle, i actually consider him to be the best in Australia . he is a wonderful man and if you ever have the pleasure of meeting him you will be impressed as he is nature’s gentlemen . I have to say I am worried about his decision to go to NEW FM but i wish him all the best and like everyone else thats worked with him i am proud to call him a good mate.

Hey craig can you give us an update on what’s going on at NEW?? Is Rob gunna move to brekkie? There music an what they have planed? An what happened to kath?

Comment by Matt on April 1st, 2009

Hi everyone and thankyou very much for all the kind words. I’m humbled. Granted, NEW-FM has been a basket case in the past but since his arrival last year GUY ASHFORD has been assembling the best team he can lay his hands on. It’s my great pleasure to be helping out.
NEW-FM will also begin construction on a new purpose built radio station on it’s existing site at Sandgate. Can I see NEW-FM competing on a level playing field with KO/NX in the future? Yes. You’d have to have your head up your arse to say no.
So there’s going to be a new biulding and the on-air sound is also receiving a bit of renovation as well which will continue. AS they say “it’s not going to happen overnight but it will happen”.
There’s a great bunch of locals working here at NEW-FM and I think they deserve a medal for all the hard work they put in.

Best wishes.

Duck

Rob,

Thx for the comment. Sounds like you’re staying for a while. Is that true?

If so, good news for NEWFM and radio in Ncle. Hope you can get your hands dirty and make a difference. We need a bit of competition in this town.

Hey Rob, word around town is that Ashford is out and St John or Hetherington are in so enjoy the honeymoon…as for the new building it’s been starting in 2 weeks for 5 years..

hi i was in newcastle last week im now in brisbane and had a listen to all the stations in town and newfm sounds great i dont seem to understand why you say it sux at present?thay seem to be doing a fantastic job at new.
Nx,and ko dont seem to sound that great (if you compare them to mmm&2dayfm)
KO should now call them selfs triple m now anyway thay seem to aim at males only.i think newfm is on the right track enjoy the ride up;;;;;;;;;;;;

Comment by hay on April 7th, 2009

No Newfm is great now, i didnt mean Newfm in general just the music is all over the place.. Newcastle now has three stations all playing to the same or very close format. Their is now the biggest opening for New to play the old Rock tunes that you cant here on radio in Newcastle anymore. Ko always played the older music an rated very well from that format, but have seemed to head to new music aswell?? I would love to here New go back to rock an start playing The Doors, Pink Floyed, Credence, Bob Dylan, The Who, Richard Clapton, ACDC, Queen, Cold Chisel, Rush, Little River Band, Carly Simon, America, ZZ Top, Men at work, Bob Seger, Phil Collins, Pearl Jam, Live, an thats just a few off the top of my head.. An does an1 know what date this month the ratings are out??

Comment by Evolution on April 9th, 2009

can we have an update on New Fm.
I am a little cheesed off they don’t have Blind Melon on through the week.

Comment by maree on April 11th, 2009

Maree

The first survey results of the year are about to be released. That will allow us to assess the progress of NEWFM and all other stations.

Its a bit of a shame Melon isn’t on air, as he actually had a loyal following.

Its good news that Rob Duckworth appears to be hanging around at NEWFM, although his presence will be too late for these ratings.

More soon.

Comment by Craig Wilson on April 13th, 2009

Rock on Duck. I was a loyal listeener of yours on 2MMM. I can’t believe they let you go. No great loss there mate, they’ve been going down the toilet (bit by bit) for years. I live up Nth now anyway, so I’m real happy you’re here. You’d remember me Rob, I used to harass you to play Metallica all the time.

Play ‘Enter Sandman’ for me will ya. LOL

Cheers mate,
Dave.
