Goodness & Happiness by Neil Perkin19Nov08
Neil Perkin at Only Dead Fish is one of my favourite bloggers and a great marketing mind. He has just released a sensation slide show called Goodness & Happiness (2) which is really worth a look.
Maybe this should be our collective approach to business in 2009. Nuff said.

Nominate your favourite Australian media and marketing posts of 2008
All good bloggers know (or are learning) that quality tends to win out over quantity when it comes to posts. One really thought provoking, well written posts can deliver more traffic, subscribers and attention than 20 ordinary posts.
The penny really dropped for me soon after I relaunched Media Hunter with a new look and format a few months ago. Rather than pumping out countless random posts and regurgitating facts and news from around the world, I decided to post less regularly, taking the time to identify poignant topics and research them well before tapping out the post.
It was a good decision. Two of my more recent posts (…The sound of a marketing and media revolution and A Turning point in media and marketing history?) have gone on to be the most read Media Hunter pieces ever (OK I am no Seth Godin, but I was happy) while another post on Barack Obama’s digital marketing strategy, A Web 2.0 President?, resulted in editorial coverage in Adnews thanks to Mark Chenery.
The point is that quality counts.
When Katie Harris asked readers of her Zebra Bites blog to send her some brain food and inspiration via links to the posts they were most proud of, I started thinking…..maybe we need to honour the best Media and Marketing Posts of the Year. A sort of Walkley Awards for Media and Marketing Weblogs.
Welcome to THE MOGGIES!
So, please submit your nomination for the best Australian media and marketing blog posts of 2008. It could be one of yours, or it be by someone else. The only conditions are that it be Australian, be media and marketing focused, was originally posted in 2008 and that is original work.
I will take nominations until midnight Friday 12 December (AEST) then shortlist the Top 10 posts before announcing the Gold Moggy at a Gala blog posting (pizza and beer for me) on Monday 22 December.
In true web style the winner will receive….no compensation or prizes but lots of kudos, links and well-deserved praise.
So over to you: What is your Moggy nomination for Australian Media and Marketing Post of 2008?

Two of the best explain the whys and hows of social media18Oct08
Seth Godin is an International thought leader, blogger and author who has helped redefine marketing over the last decade. Seth’s posts are some of the first I read each week amongst the dozens of feeds I have streaming in. One of his recent posts, subtly plugging his new book Tribes, explains the typical marketing cycle and how social media may have finally broken the cycle.

Top 50 Australian Marketing blogs9Oct08
Julian Cole’s second appraisal of Australia’s Top 50 Marketing blogs has been published in B&T Magazine and I am proud to say that Media Hunter and Sticky Advertising have figured prominently.
The 10 October issue of B&T lists the Top 50 Marketing blogs and a feature article Welcome to Australia’s Marketing Blogosphere.
Media Hunter came in at #13 (up several spots from the original ranking) and was closely followed by fellow Sticky blogger Gordon Whitehead’s The Marketer at #14.
The most pleasant surprise though was seeing our new agency website www.stickyads.com.au being ranked #32 in Australia.
Having three sites from the one agency figuring so highly in social media and blogging circles is quite an honour and something that we will endeavour to maintain.
Once again congratulations to Julian Cole for taking the time to trawl the Aussie blogosphere. And congrats to B&T for embracing this new strand of the marketing world. It’s further proof that blogging and social media are gaining relevance in Australia.

Media Hunter v2.03Oct08
Welcome to the new and improved Media Hunter.
I launched the Media Hunter in April 2007 after meeting with Gavin Heaton and having an in-depth discussion on social media, blogging and the future of marketing. Inspired by his efforts with Servant of Chaos, I decided to create a site dedicated to the industry I work in and region I live in. Hence Media Hunter.

Hunter golfers flock to new site1Sep08
The Hunter Valley’s number one golf course, Newcastle Golf Club, has launched an innovative new website.
Newcastlegolf.com.au provides the Hunter Region’s golfers with the latest local, national and international golf news, course reports and weather links. It also invites member feedback and comment via its regular posts and comment sections.
An advertising component has been built into the site so that members and local businesses can advertisie their services to the site’s large audience. This initiative is a welcome one for a club which operates on membership fees, green fees and bar takings.
If you would like to advertise your business to a large and loyal golfing community contact the club for mmore information.

Some Aussie media blogs worth a look19Aug08
One of the great things about checking traffic to your site is finding new links that have directed people to you and then exploring those sites. This week my online meanderings have unearthed a few sites I either hadn’t been aware of or hadn’t visited yet.
Laurel Papworth is a Top 100 Australian blogger, who is regularly interviewed about social networks in international press and on Australian TV shows and Radio National, Vogue Australia, The Australian and the Fin Review, SMH, Telegraph, and various magazines. Her Social Networks blog provides excellent insight into social media, participatory journalism and user-generated content.
Laurel recently posted about Australia’s most influential bloggers and was kind enough to mention Media Hunter. The post touches on some of the media and marketing lists such as AdAges Power 150 and AdSpace Pioneers. Overall its a good introduction to some of the best marketing content online.
Naked Bear Media is a new blog on the block by digital marketer Sean Smith. I have only just come across this one but I like what is see so far. Sean doesn’t seem afraid to make some bold statements and ask good questions. In just a few posts he has lined up Twitter, the iPhone and NineMSN. Good stuff.

Blogs change boundaries for US news coverage31Jul08
Source: Geoff Elliott, Washington correspondent, The Australian
It was in Knoxville, Tennessee where I was put in my place as a foreign correspondent covering a US election.
Democrat Harold Ford, a young, up-and-coming leader in the mould of Barack Obama, was running for a US senate seat andhe refused to answer any questions.
"We’re not talking to you, you don’t win us any votes," his spokeswoman helpfully informed me.
Never mind that Ford had just said in a speech that Australia wanted to pursue nuclear weapons (still waiting for a clarification on that Harold) but I’m not at all convinced his spokeswoman’s premise holds, at least if it is also framed in the negative.
Ford lost the election. He lost for many reasons (the Republican attack machine that created a racially coded advertisement was disgraceful) but on substance there’s a chance Ford’s gaffe as I reported could have cost him a couple of votes.

Future of Media 08 summit wrap16Jul08
I headed down to Sydney yesterday for the Future of Media Summit 2008 hosted by Ross Dawson and his Future Exploration Network. Firstly, congratulations to Ross and his hard-working team for putting on such a professional and informative event. It went off without a a hitch and everyone was extremely accommodating.
Officially the #FOM08 event was held in two parts: the conference session with live simulcast between Sydney and Silicon Valley, and the "Unconference" sessions allowing for debate and open forum conversation on various topics.
However, like last month’s PubCamp events in Sydney and Melbourne, there was a third aspect to the event that only half the attendees were aware of – the Twitter back channel and live commentary being conducted by many of the audience. For me, this was at least as informative and stimulating as the conference itself.

Link Maintenance13Jun08
Web 2.0 and social media is all about links. Linking people. Linking information. Linking ideas.
I recently updated my URL to mediahunter.com.au from my original typepad address. This could cause havoc with my various rankings but in the long term will be a better address for this site.
If you currently have Media Hunter linked from your site I greatly would appreciate if you could update the URL. If you haven’t linked Media Hunter then I would equally appreciate the new "link-love".
Thanks in advance.
