Random Acts of Kindness to Nine

It couldn’t last, of course. After Seven showed a pile of football on Friday night, Channel Ten had to relinquish its leadership in audience share. But its strong showing in the first three days of the week, mainly due to Masterchef, meant that the final prime time averages were: Seven 27.0 per cent of the audience, Ten 25.8 per cent, Nine 25.2, ABC 17.1, SBS 5.0.

Television in Australia is suffering from too much clutter

Television in Australia is suffering from too much clutter - originally uploaded by arnisto

Is television advertising under threat in Australia?

Earlier this week Robert Morgan, executive chairman of the Clemenger advertising group, wrote an excellent piece for The Australian. He argued that TV in Australia is suffering due to advertising clutter.

Morgan observed that in the early days of TV advertising

Each show had three breaks of one minute each plus an opening and closing billboard, and between programs there would be one 20-second commercial and one 10-second — roughly half of the bombardment we get today. The thought of a competitor being within half an hour of your commercial was absolutely out of the question.”

Today its much, much worse. TV is extremely cluttered and its competing with a plethora of entertainment options.

The Newcastle Ratings

The Newcastle Ratings Week 24, week ending 13 June 2009

A year ago to this date, the ratings figures where some what completely different. SC Ten was struggling to make a decent 17, 18%. NBN was dominant, nearly reaching the 40′s and Prime, well, was always in a definite second place to NBN that was never challenged. Fast forward today and the figures have gone haywire. NBN still a clear winner, but not pulling the viewing numbers it used to. SC Ten has jumped on board the ‘Why be Third when you can be Second Train’ and Prime is slowly sinking in ratings before our eyes, although it did rise 1% from last week? Interesting…

Who’s Who?

National Ratings

At the moment, the commercial stations are closer in audience share than they have been in years. Thanks mainly to Masterchef, Channel Ten averaged 24.5 per cent of the prime time audience last week, while Nine got 25.5 and Seven got 27.6 (ABC 17.4, SBS 5.0). That’s a portrait of how the year will proceed: Seven static, Nine continuing its slow decline, and Ten booming (but not quite enough to knock Nine off No. 2 spot).

SC TEN has done it again…

The Newcastle Ratings Week 23, week ending 06 June 2009

Last week the ratings figures took a dramatic change, with SC TEN jumping over Prime for a strong second. Again this week SC TEN has done it again, beating Prime for the second place position on the stations ratings. NBN and SC TEN seem to be going up in figures, however, Prime seems to be going down? As for the most watched programs, SC Ten has managed to get two of its programs up on the NBN dominated board.

Read on for the figures…

It’s just as well The Chaser team decided to do their satire on sentimental fundraising on a night when their show was up against one of the biggest biffo events of the year. The State of Origin distracted 400,000 of the Chaser’s most conservative fans and therefore saved them from being shocked and offended. When some of them tuned in to ABC2 for the repeat later in the week, to see what the fuss was about, they found the controversial item had been deleted.

Just who you calling Old and Daggy?!

The Newcastle Ratings Week 22, week ending 30 May 2009

With the Newcastle Ratings this week, some interesting shows pop up. Apart from our weekly NBN News favourite, its changed focus from Underbelly, shows such as Find My Family or the common contender The Zoo, to mixing it up with the ABC programs. Masterchef on SC TEN is still managing to stay in the top ten each week it airs and also an old favourite, Getaway, has crept back into the chart. Maybe that’s got something to do with people dreaming of a holiday, that at the present time is unachievable?

The Stations Ratings are also quite fascinating, well the battle for second, third and fourth place, between Prime, SC Ten and ABC is anyway. SC Ten has finished a strong 2nd while ABC actually pipped Prime. I can’t remember the last time that happened.

Hmmm, Should Prime be worried?

“Chasing” The Ratings

In theory, Masterchef was the number two most watched program in the mainland capitals last week. In fact, if you add together the three showings of Specks and Specks — twice on ABC1 and once on ABC2 — you find that its total audience was 1.81 million. No wonder Channel Ten felt confident in cloning it into Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation.

On the same theory, the return of The Chaser’s WOE would be the week’s number four most watched program in the mainland capitals, with a total audience of 1.66 million. No wonder the ABC ended the week with a handsome 17.5 per cent share of the prime time audience, while Ten came close to knocking Nine off number two spot with its 24.2 per cent (with Seven on 27.5, Nine on 25.7 and SBS on 5.2).

Ten is up then Ten is Down
25May09

Channel Ten went so well on Tuesday and Wednesday there was a possibility it could come in as number two station last week. But its programing falls apart on Thursday and Friday, with the result that the prime time audience shares at week’s end were: Seven 27.9 per cent, Nine 26.0, Ten 23.4, ABC 16.9, SBS 5.9 (higher than usual thanks to a boost from Eurovision on Sunday). Care to suggest what Ten should show to improve its chances on Thurs and Fri?
