V Energy drinks engage audience online with RAW
12May09

Here’s an example a consumer brand utilising some creative thinking and alternative marketing  to reach their younger target demographic.

In 2007 V Energy drink launched V Raw as a way to bring V’s brand personality as a creative inspiration to life and  allow young Australians to engage, create  and participate with the brand. The core concept was to create a dream job program focused on industries notoriously hard to break into – music, fashion and design.

Since launch, V Energy Drink has placed over 80 young Australians in their dream jobs through the V Raw program, helping them find ‘where they fit’ in creative industries.

However the current economic climate is making it harder for young creatives to get their dream job. Rather than step back, V Energy drink has increased their investment on the program, adding new features to inspire and motivate consumers to follow their dream.

US Study Reveals Ad Agencies Lack Key Information on DVRs
4May09

Digital Video Recorders seen as biggest threat to TV advertising effectiveness

According to a recent study, Advertising in the DVR Age (available on www.DVRresearch.com), advertising executives believe DVRs represent the greatest challenge for TV advertising in the next three years. The study was conducted by the DVR Research Institute and was be released on May 1.

Surprisingly, these research results indicate that neither the advertisers nor their ad agencies are confident they have the information they need to make adjustments in advertising strategy to address the impact of DVRs. This is despite agencies identifying DVR’s as the biggest threat to the effectiveness of TV advertising, ahead of the Internet

Nearly 75 percent of the respondents “somewhat” or “completely disagree” that they have all the relevant information about DVRs and their impact on TV advertising.

Is Freeview putting the cart before the horse?
27Apr09

A new campaign kicked off last night promoting Freeview, the new digital offerings by Australia’s free-to-air television networks. This is the second campaign in less than 6 months, coming on the heals of the much talked about November launch which promised a whole new world of options and entertainment from January 2009.

I was convinced and couldn’t wait to see what was going to be broadcast. I even installed a new set-top box in anticipation.

So how disappointed do you think I was, and thousands of other viewers, when January came and went with no new Freeview channels launching? In fact there wasn’t a commercial offering until March when the TEN Network finally unveiled ONE, their new dedicated sports channel. In the meantime, the best Freeview viewing came from an online parody of the Freeview promotional campaign, which proved to be much closer to the truth than what the campaign promised.

Web technology changing face of television
31Mar09

Web technology continues to encroach on traditional media at a rapid pace. While many US newspapers give way to online, television is also being transformed by new technology.

Here are some examples coming out of the US:

TiVo, the ad-skipping, time shifting digital television recording device, is now delivering web video to televisions. Rather than download and watch longer format video on small screens, TiVo allows video to be viewed easily through your television.

TiVo have begun working with YouTube, Amazon, Netflix and over 50 other sources to deliver web video to television. So far TiVo have had over 30 million downloads by 60% of their broadband-connected customers.

SXSW Interactive Festival Wrap
23Mar09

South by South West (SXSW) is the most significant event of the US digital and interactive conference circuit. It attracts A-List bloggers, the biggest and best tech companies, ambitious start-ups and thousands and thousands of the brightest minds in the online community to Austin, Texas for an amazing week of information, presentations and evening events.

SXSW is an extremely stimulating and almost overwhelming experience. Thousands of people constantly move around the Austin Convention Centre heading to the various panels and presentations. Multiple events are held simultaneously, making it hard to choose which to attend. Many attendees attempt to check out more than one session in an hour, while others follow one event on Twitter whilst attending another.

For many, the greatest value of SXSW is meeting and talking with others they have only previously known online, or holding impromptu doorway meet-ups with so many keen minds.
