7TWO is not a Prime number
2Nov09

We’ve been swamped with traffic for the launch of new digital television station 7TWO and plenty of emails and comments asking when the channel will launch in Prime regional viewing areas.

Prime is the affiliate station for the Seven network in much of regional Australia. Like their regional competitors, Southern Cross (TEN) and NBN & WIN (Nine), Prime are anticipated to take on the new digital station from their affiliate partner….and they will….eventually.

There is one hitch in the plan, though. The new station’s name.

Southern Cross were happy to take on OneHD from TEN. NBN were happy to take on GO! from Nine. But for Prime the 7TWO name and branding is too closely identified with the Seven Network. Its not an easy brand for them to work with and Seven clearly weren’t thinking much about their affiliates when they settled on the name.

So regional Australia, that’s why you won’t be watching 7TWO for a while. We’ll let you know when an agreement has been reached and launch is scheduled.

Seven has always faltered in this area. Whereas Nine historically have always modelled their promotions and branding so that it was easy for its regional partners WIN or NBN to slip their logo on instead, but Seven have never made it easy for its affiliates in that regard. Mind you, I don’t see why they can’t just run 7TWO with maybe a PrimeTWO watermark or something but I’m not a marketing person clearly.

This problem of branding for the affiliates is a bit like the old tale of the virgin bride who asked her mother what she should wear to bed on her wedding night, the mother of the bride responded by saying “it doesn’t matter as the end result will be the same”.
Who cares if it’s called Prime2 or even Prime Squared. People are watching Go! and One HD for the content, not the logo.

Interesting to say that branding is the issue given that PRIME were carrying 7HD break aways without any change to the branding and that they have 7 news, 7 sport and 7 on Prime or 7/Prime much of the time.

Maybe it is time for branding to be nationalised – that is Prime becomes Seven – if we are truly going to move forward and help regional Australia keep up with the capital city counterparts.

There’s only going to be more of it in the future with a third channel to come from Ten next year and most likley Seven and Nine further down the track.

What a reliable sounding source? I’m not sure the entire hold-up is just over the name…

Jared, the source of this information was Prime management. I can’t vouch for whether it is the actual reason, but it is the reason they gave.

Like we have any choice!!

TV Stations can do what they like, because we can’t vote with out wallets.

I do wonder if Prime have just dug a great hole for themselves though. TV & Media complain about piracy and so on with regards to the Internet, and with Prime playing politics with such high profile shows as Heroes (new season starting tonight), I believe they’re just driving even more people straight into downloading the shows off the internet.

I’m dead-set against piracy, but you know what.. In this instance, I think Prime need to be shown that the consumer won’t stand for this type of treatment.

Here’s some irony for you. Foxtel will carry 7TWO from Nov 24th. I’m not sure what Austar’s plans are for it.

class people. Get your act together and bring us what our city cousins have 7Two. Grow up prime we all can play in the same sand pit and enjoy tv at its best. Are you worried to many people will leave you station and find some one who thinks of their viewers first.

Where is the acma and other tv authorities, they are suppose to deal with rouge stations who are have no reason not to be broadcasting digital channels.

Prime takes 7 news , take 7 sport take other shows what has channel 7 the broadcaster.

No doubt the genius management at Prime are trying to find away to make 72 a station where 50% of air time can become advertorials – just like Prime – the name itself a contradiction !
Regional Australia will always be the cities poor relation.

Comment by Bob Gregg on November 9th, 2009

This is like children in the playground. we all know that prime is 7 so what’s the problem Prime?

I live 1 hour south of sydney and I am unable to get 7TWO because of the nitwits at Prime.

get rid of the dummy spitters in Prime and get 7two on the air for regional Australia!
