Welcome SC TEN25May09
The Newcastle Ratings Week 21, week ending 23 May 2009
Prime looks to be having a rest for now, as our usual third place channel SC TEN has defied all odds last week to leap over Prime to steal second place on the stations ratings. There’s absolutely no catching NBN on a high 32.7, but as you can see in the ratings SC TEN has played a swap in the numbers from a fortnight ago, where it was struggling on 17.9 and Prime being a high 21.7 compared to now week 21’s rating numbers.
As for the most watched programs, the NBN News seems to still be quite the favourite. Spicks and Specks is back on the chart helping ABC and maybe its from Masterchef Australia that helped bring SC TEN up dramatically with the ratings?
All in all quite interesting, read on to see the results:

Channel Ten went so well on Tuesday and Wednesday there was a possibility it could come in as number two station last week. But its programing falls apart on Thursday and Friday, with the result that the prime time audience shares at week’s end were: Seven 27.9 per cent, Nine 26.0, Ten 23.4, ABC 16.9, SBS 5.9 (higher than usual thanks to a boost from Eurovision on Sunday). Care to suggest what Ten should show to improve its chances on Thurs and Fri?
Connection Generation by Iggy Pintado24May09
The human race has always had an innate desire to connect. The communication revolution taught us how to speak to each other individually or en masse using various mediums. Now, connection technology has made it easier, more effective and more efficient to connect.
Connection Generation, a new book by Australian marketer and author Iggy Pintado, explores how we have evolved through our six degrees of separation to embrace connection technology.
Where did all the Newcastle viewers go?18May09
The Newcastle Ratings Week 20, week ending 16 May 2009
Only one program in Newcastle achieved an audience greater than 100,000 last week while the rest of the top 10 programs ranged between 84,000 and 63, 000 viewers. Those sort of numbers don’t normally represent Top 10 programs outside of summer non-ratings periods.
Two weeks ago the 10th highest rating program in Newcastle had 74,000 viewers. Likewise, this time last year saw an average of 10,000 more viewers watching the top 10 free-to-air programs. So where did all the viewers disappear to last week?
Sex Scandals = High Ratings18May09

Ten started last week with a big advantage, thanks to Merlin, Masterchef and Two Apostrophes. But then the biffo scandal played into the hands of Channel Nine, boosting numbers for A Current Affair and The Footy Show, and Nine has resumed its traditional ranking as Still The Two. The average prime time audience shares were: Seven 28.3, Nine 25.7, Ten 22.9, ABC 17.4, SBS 5.6.
Sadly, the massively pre-publicised episode of Four Corners that started the week’s frenzy got only 1 million viewers in the mainland capitals, which suggests that most football fans don’t care, or can’t find the ABC on their remotes.
The ABC of Censorship13May09
Last night’s episode of The Gruen Transfer stirred up a hornets nest of discussion after one of the advertisements for The Pitch segment was not shown as it was deemed offensive by ABC management. Instead, host Wil Anderson introduced the acceptable commercial by the other “contestant” in the segment and advised viewers that if they wished to see the censored commercial they could visit a website.
You can view The Foundry’s withdrawn commercial here.
The topic of the brief for the segment was to create an ad to “END SHAPE DISCRIMINATION” against fat people.
A statement from ABC’s director of television said:
The episode was reviewed the following day and the decision made that the broadcast of The Pitch segment would breach ABC Editorial Policies.
V Energy drinks engage audience online with RAW12May09
Here’s an example a consumer brand utilising some creative thinking and alternative marketing to reach their younger target demographic.
In 2007 V Energy drink launched V Raw as a way to bring V’s brand personality as a creative inspiration to life and allow young Australians to engage, create and participate with the brand. The core concept was to create a dream job program focused on industries notoriously hard to break into – music, fashion and design.
Since launch, V Energy Drink has placed over 80 young Australians in their dream jobs through the V Raw program, helping them find ‘where they fit’ in creative industries.
However the current economic climate is making it harder for young creatives to get their dream job. Rather than step back, V Energy drink has increased their investment on the program, adding new features to inspire and motivate consumers to follow their dream.
MediaCom chief declares full service agencies dead12May09
From Helen Schuller, Adnews
The advertising industry has become too complicated to ever go back to a full service agency model, said MediaCom chief Anne Parsons today (12 May).
“[A full service model] is simplistic and the simplicity is not relevant. It’s not organic,” Parsons told the Advertising, Marketing & Media Summit 2009.
She said today the industry is much more complex but also more reflective.
“In the last few years the big challenge how to manage large amounts of data,” she said.
Logies..Who’s That?11May09
Newcastle Ratings Week 19 2009
For the Newcastle ratings last week it was a killer. NBN beating runner up Prime by pretty much a 10. point lead. It must be something about this time of year, as the results were similar last year.
As for the most watched programs, Underbelly for its finally week, got to go out with one more bang as leader of the programs watched. Now that the footy season is in full swing, its not surprising we are seeing NBN’s Friday Night Football back up on the most watched chart, being one of NBN’s high raters when in season. I was surprised to see the Logies didn’t even make it on the leader board, although on the other hand, the red carpet was probably the only part being viewed by most females out there.
