Ten Newcastle beats Prime again
21Jul08

Newcastle Television ratings week 29, 2008

Late last year Prime was on the verge of toppling NBN in Newcastle. For several weeks there was only half a ratings point between them.

Fast forward to mid-2008 and the landscape is a lot different. NBN is back in its traditional dominant ratings position, while Prime has fallen behind Southern Cross Ten for the second consecutive week. Suddenly the exciting Prime content of last season has become passe and the dream of toppling NBN is but a distant memory.

Seven wins a week
20Jul08

The national TV ratings race by David Dale of Sun Herald blogs

Just as Mussolini made the trains run on time in Italy by redefining the concept of lateness, Channel Seven is able to announce it won the first half of the year by redefining the concept of prime time. By looking at viewing habits between 6pm and 10.30 pm, Seven can claim a slightly higher audience share than Nine for the first half. It’s only the pesky industry standard of 6pm to midnight that makes Nine look good and Seven look bad.

In fact, Seven didn’t need any redefinition to win last week. Between 6pm and midnight it averaged 27.3 per cent of the audience (thanks to City Homicide, RSPCA Animal Rescue and Seven News Sunday, all with 1.6 million viewers), while Nine got 26.3 per cent (thanks to 60 Minutes on 1.8m, Domestic Blitz on 1.7m and Nine news Sunday on 1.6m),.

Ten got 21.5 (thanks to NCIS on 1.3m and Jamie Oliver’s Eat To Save Your Life on 1.2m, but no thanks to Big Brother, which was unable even to attract viewers curious to see its death throes); ABC got 17.6 (thanks to Spicks and Specks and The Gruen Transfer on 1.3m, the news and Silent Witness on 1.2m and Doctor Who on 1.1m) and SBS got 7.2 (thanks to Top Gear on 922,000 and Inspector Rex on 411,000).

Fairfax woes as Big Brother leaves house
16Jul08

Source: Nick Tabakoff, The Australian

QUESTIONS were raised yesterday about the wisdom of Fairfax Media’s purchase of the Southern Star production house, after Big Brother’s axing by the Ten Network marked its third — and most important — programming casualty since the newspaper group took it over.

The move follows the recent moves to indefinitely rest two shows on the Nine Network — the Eddie McGuire-hosted game show 1 vs 100 and comedy series Monster House — also produced by Endemol Southern Star, the production house’s joint venture with global producer Endemol.

Big Brother was Endemol Southern Star’s flagship property, attracting a fee understood to have been $28 million for the 2008 edition.

Seven reshuffle as Leckie steps back
16Jul08

Source: Nick Tabakoff, The Australian

THE Seven Network’s core media division has unveiled a major management reshuffle that will allow its boss, David Leckie, to step back from some day-to-day duties in the wake of a major health scare less than three months ago.

The moves by Seven Media Group — the network’s media joint venture with private equity firm KKR covering its TV, Pacific Magazines and Yahoo7 online assets — polish the rising stars of two potential heirs to his mantle: Seven’s sales director James Warburton, 38, and 45-year-old finance chief Peter Lewis.

Mr Warburton will take on the newly created role of the group’s chief sales and digital officer, giving him huge power by putting him ultimately in charge of almost every cent of revenue for the business from its TV, print and online operations.

Future of Media 08 summit wrap
16Jul08

I headed down to Sydney yesterday for the Future of Media Summit 2008 hosted by Ross Dawson and his Future Exploration Network. Firstly, congratulations to Ross and his hard-working team for putting on such a professional and informative event. It went off without a a hitch and everyone was extremely accommodating.

Officially the #FOM08 event was held in two parts: the conference session with live simulcast between Sydney and Silicon Valley, and the "Unconference" sessions allowing for debate and open forum conversation on various topics.

However, like last month’s PubCamp events in Sydney and Melbourne, there was a third aspect to the event that only half the attendees were aware of – the Twitter back channel and live commentary being conducted by many of the audience. For me, this was at least as informative and stimulating as the conference itself.

SC Ten beats Prime while NBN streaks away
14Jul08

Prime Television in Newcastle suffered a big ratings drop last week as Southern Cross Ten enjoyed one of its best results in years.

NBN was consistent with its share of 33.8, but the big surprise was SC Ten’s leap up to 22.0 and Prime’s fall to 20.6.

Pamela Anderson’s entrance into the Big Brother house drew a large audience to Sc Ten and gave them their best results of 2008. Unfortunately the figures weren’t as impressive nationally and the Big Brother franchise has been axed from TEN after the current series.

NBN pulled big winter numbers again with 5 programs scoring over 100,000 viewers.

Axed: Confirmation Big Brother will no longer be watching
14Jul08

Source: Media Spy

There are reports today that Network Ten and Endemol Southern Star will not produce another series of Big Brother next year.

The Behind Big Brother forum reports the decision came as a
huge shock to the hundreds of employees who work on the show, which has
been running since 2001.

Gretel Killeen hosted the high rating show from its beginning until last year but was replaced this year by radio duo Kyle (Sandilands) and Jackie O on the eviction show, while Tony Squires and Rebecca Wilson host Big Mouth, a replacement for Killeen’s Big Brother Uncut program.
